about us

A journal for the makers, and the people who love them.

EthnoArts Journal is an independent, reader-supported publication founded in 2024. We document traditional craft and indigenous art around the world — not as artifacts to be admired from a distance, but as living practices in living communities.

What we publish

Long-form reportage, photo essays, interviews with master artisans, festival dispatches, short documentary videos, and a worldwide calendar of events. Every story is reported in the field — we go to the makers, not the other way around.

Our editorial principles

  • The maker first. Artisans are credited, quoted, and (where possible) paid for participation.
  • Cultural consent. We do not publish sacred or restricted imagery without explicit community permission.
  • No corporate appropriation. We will not promote brands that copy indigenous designs without compensation.
  • Reader-supported. We carry no programmatic ads. Membership and shop sales fund the work.

Who we are

A small team of writers, photographers and editors based in Lisbon, Mexico City, and Chiang Mai, with contributors in twenty more cities. We work closely with cultural institutions including the Smithsonian Center for Folklife and Cultural Heritage, UNESCO's ICH section, and a network of regional craft co-operatives.
